"Music seems to be creeping back to Tin Pan Alley. If someone looks right they just build a group around them."
So says Ian Broudie, one half of the Liverpool duo Care. Often described as 'the odd couple', their second single 'Flaming Sword' has sold on misical merits alone. They've never been on TV, the have never played live and they're hardly a major part of the Camden Palace gossip column set. "We haven't bought an audience," they say, "We've sold a single." Formed last summer, the pair have been involved with various local bands. Paul Simpson is the other half who'sin bed with flu - 'He took some night nurse and can't get out of bed'. An original member of the Teardrop Explodes, he also played with the Wild Swansa band that featured Jeri Kelly from the Lotus Eaters (all these names I Ask you!)
Ian was in archetypal punk band Big In Japan (with Budgie from the Banshees and Dave Balf from the Teardrop Explodes, Incestuous or what?). And then he moved to the Original Mirrors, who were critically acclaimed but little else. And more recently under the alias Kingbird, he's been producing the likes of Echo and the Bunnymen, Wah! and The Danse Society, not forgetting Care's own latest single. 'I think i'm a really crap producer and i'm not a great guitarist but I can do simple things really well. But Paul writes really good lyrics and melodies. I just stick my oar in and ruin it!' But seriously, Ian considers their combined talents to be far greater than that of the two individuals. We have definately got something special. Their ambition is to write great songs, but modern ones. Most people tend to go back to the past. And naturally they want to sell lots of records. We want our music to go against the grain - but we don't want to be tagged as underground. I want to be full of hopeand spirit and melody, and to be beautiful .
