MY BOYISH DAYS
Sounds - Another duo, Ian Broudie and Paul Simpson of Care just stepped out of Edith Nesbit or some Ealing war picture, all baggy pants and big ears, parted mops of hair....hence 'My Boyish Days' (Arista), sung by the plummiest tenor ever to confront a microphone, keeps up the Revolutionary Spirit of Blakean childhood.
Record Mirror - The Liverpool mafia strikes again. Ex-Original Mirror person and Bunnymen and Wah! producer Ian Broudie knocks out a sultry number tat goes down nicely with the lazy, hazy days of summer and a cool glass of Pimms No1.
FLAMING SWORD
Sounds - I very nearly passed this one by - quite a joy I would have missed then - but was finally intrigued by the scraperboard sleeve. What seems on the face of it to be a love song of sorts drifts into a passionate and deadly assortment od tinklng backing and melodic vocal, totally infectious and wonderfully haunting. A carefully romantic song without the wimpy quality so many 'ballards' seem to adopt - the current Friends Again single included.
WHAT EVER POSSESSED YOU
Dainty little sleigh-ride, half an ear cocked toeards diluted Orange Juice, the other half to the solid business sense of tritely chiming banks of mandolin and sundry other plucked and strummed instruments.
